SSL lighting has many desirable attributes for the home. In addition to the array of lighting design options available, the range in color temperature allows for the perfect ambiance to be created in a space. Unlike florescent lighting, LEDs are fully dimmable.
Lighting accounts for 15-20% of electricity use in the home. SSL lighting has been found to use 75% less wattage in downlighting and undercabinet lighting. A single LED lightbulb can outlast 30 incandescents, or 6 CFLs.
In addition to lowering the amount of electricity used for lighting, LEDs can also save on cooling costs. LEDs generate very little heat, and good rule of thumb is for every kWh of electricity reduced by using SSLs instead of incandescent, you can keep your thermostat higher and reduce your A/C costs by about 20%. The low operating temperatures render them safe to the touch even after hours of use.
They contain no hazardous substances, and do not emit ultraviolet light, which can cause degradation of art pieces inside, and attract insects outside.
